LES RIVIÈRES

Mai Hua | 2019 | France | 95’ | Documentary

Mai Hua is a French-Vietnamese single mom with two children. In 2013, with her mother, she brings her dying grandmother back to France. As the old woman miraculously recovers, an unresolved past resurfaces: Mai becomes the heir to a complex and painful family memory that she refuses to pass on to her daughter. Through this lineage of women and her quest for truth, the director dives into a family archeology that is both intimate and universal.

Mai Hua is a French artist of Vietnamese origin based in Paris. Color Designer (Louis Vuitton, Issey Miyake, Giorgio Armani), director and author of the philosophical blog maihua.fr/en, Mai explores our links to the intimate, the quest for truth and spirituality. Her 2 documentaries, Les Rivières, a family archeology about her line of women, and Make me a Man, proposing new models of masculinity in connection with therapy and vulnerability, explore these notions with contemporary intensity and dazzling emotional intelligence. Mai is currently working on writing of her first book, with French editions L’Iconoclaste.
